Tesco Ireland has doubled the number of Delivering Equality of Opportunity (DEIS) primary schools nationwide receiving supports from its Stronger Starts schools programme, months ahead of schedule.

According to the retailer, every week of the school term, 5,400 children in 240 DEIS primary schools are now receiving free, fresh food packs containing a mix of seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables including apples, onions, potatoes, and carrots.

Doubling the number of schools involved means hundreds more primary school children and their families are getting help to make and create healthier meal solutions at home, it added.

About Tesco Stronger Starts

Tesco Stronger Starts is an innovative community support programme from Tesco that helps to build thriving communities nationwide.

Commenting on Stronger Starts, Rosemary Garth, communications director, Tesco: “Reaching this milestone ahead of schedule is hugely significant and shows the ambition and momentum behind this important initiative.

“To date, Tesco has distributed over two million meals via DEIS primary schools, and this announcement means that hundreds more primary school children and families who are most in need, will receive free nutritious fresh fruit and veg to help with healthier meal solutions at home.”

The programme began as a pilot in 2021, providing food packs to children in just 40 DEIS schools, and has grown rapidly since.
