Known for community-focused convenience retailing, Gala Retail is marking its milestone 20th year by giving back to the communities its stores service. This week, Gala Retail launched its new initiative ‘Gala Gifts for Schools’ which will see the retail group giving away €20,000 to primary schools.

One winning primary school will be awarded a €10,000 cash gift, with two runners-up schools benefiting from cash gifts of €5,000 each.

Primary schools from across Ireland are invited to enter the competition by submitting a 30 second video, via the Gala website, telling Gala how their school would benefit from the prize money.

Gala Gifts for Schools was officially launched by actress and presenter, Aoibhin Garrihy, who will also be part of the judging panel, alongside editor of the Primary Times magazine, Marie O’Reilly.

“This  is a milestone year for Gala and we recognise that we wouldn’t be where we are today without the ongoing support of our stores’ communities throughout Ireland,” said Gary Desmond, CEO of Gala Retail.

Describing Gala’s 20th anniversary as “the ideal time for Gala to give back to its communities”, Desmond said the group is “looking for creative videos, featuring projects that will help to improve schools and the rounded educational experience that our children enjoy”.

Gala has partnered with Primary Times magazine to promote the new initiative within schools. According to Marie O’Reilly, editor of Primary Times: “Budgets are always tight within schools and often there’s very deserving projects that just can’t be facilitated due to budget constraints, and projects not falling within the ‘core curriculum’.”

She therefore encouraged principals and teachers to drive the initiative forward within their schools as “the Gala cash gifts could really make a difference to pupils’ learning and educational experiences”.

The Gala Gifts for Schools scheme is open now for entries.  Only one entry may be permitted per school. For more information, T&Cs and how to enter, visit www.gala.ie. Deadline for entries is 26 March 2018.
