I guess like everyone who works in the industry and is passionate about it, choosing your favourite drink is a daunting task. You are constantly tasting and looking for great products, and to be effective at this you need to have a broad pallet. I find when choosing a drink my choice will depend on two main factors, firstly my mood at the time and then, the company I’m drinking with.

But when it comes down to what I really love, and what I always go back to – things start to narrow down. I fell in love with the wines of Priorat many years ago when a Catalonian friend introduced me to the wines of Gratallops, a hilltop village beside the river Siurana. There are only six wineries surrounding the village and I still have one winery to sample, so the journey continues.  But it is not only the Priorats from this village that I enjoy – I enjoy many wines from this region and I have a real grá for the Mont Sant at the moment.

The growth of Irish whiskey over the last few years has been phenomenal, and I have certainly been swept up by the rising tide and this has been a very enjoyable process for us in McCambridge’s. The fantastic work being done at Middleton and great companies like the Teeling Whiskey Company has really thrust Irish whiskey to the forefront of the world stage. I am a real fan of pot still whiskeys for their purity of flavour and subtlety on the pallet and my absolute favourite is Yellow Spot drunk with one cube of ice.

It’s fantastic to see the ongoing growth and success of the Irish craft beer industry. In McCambridge’s we have cleared all of the main brand beers from our shelves and now stock only independent craft beers. This has been an incredibly successful move and we are proud to be supporting as many local brewers as we can fit on our shelves. We are blessed to have several innovative, quality brewers based locally in Galway including Galway Hooker, Independent Brewery and the Galway Bay Brewing Company which produces my Irish favourite – Of Foam and Fury Triple IPA. But as the only hint to my nationality, Coopers Sparkling Ale brings back memories of backyard barbecues in Far North Queensland and so will always be my true favourite.
