We love hot food here at ShelfLife, the hotter the better say we. So we’re intrigued at the news that Tesco will be selling, for a limited time, the Carolina Reaper, billed as the world’s hottest chilli. It hits shelves today along with the Komodo Dragon chilli, which is back by popular demand following its launch in Tesco stores last year.

The Carolina Reaper is recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s hottest chilli, measuring an average of 1.5 million units on the Scoville scale. Some tests have seen it soar to an eye-watering, mouth-numbing 2.2 million Scovilles.

To give it some context, the Carolina Reaper is an estimated 400 times hotter than Jalapeno, a popular topping on pizzas.

Tesco Ireland fresh food buyer Joe Casey said the Carolina Reaper’s fiery flavour is a taste sensation like no other. “This is for those who can handle the heat,” he said. “Only the smallest slice is needed to add an explosion of flavour to any meal.”

The Carolina Reaper is available at a price of €1.49 (pack contains 2 – 3 chillies) at the following Tesco stores:

Ardkeen, Artaine, Baggot St Upper, Balbriggan Extra, Ballybrack, Blanchardstown, Bloomfields, Bray, Cabra, Carlow Square, Castlebar, Celbridge New Store, Clarehall Extra, Donore Rd Drogheda Extra, Dooradoyle, Douglas Extra, Dundalk Extra, Dundrum TC, Finglas Clearwater, Gorey, Greystones, Golden Island, Galway, Jervis St, Killarney Park, Letterkenny Square, Lucan, Limerick Coonagh, Mahonm, Maynooth Extra, Merrion, Naas Extra, Navan, Newbridge Moorefield, Nutgrove, Oranmore, Paul St., Phibsboro, Portlaoise, Prussia St., Rathfarnham, Rathmines, Sandymount, Santry, Sligo, Stillorgan, Tallaght, Wexford Extra, Wicklow, Wilton Square
