Tesco Ireland has launched its 2026 festive recruitment drive, offering 1,725 temporary positions across its stores nationwide as it prepares for the busy Christmas shopping period.

The recruitment drive represents an increase of more than 600 festive roles compared with last year. Tesco said the rise reflects the expansion of its store network and online operations across Ireland during 2026.

The additional positions will provide employment opportunities for people seeking retail experience or extra income over the Christmas period, while supporting Tesco’s existing 13,500 permanent store colleagues.

Flexible shifts available across Ireland

Tesco is recruiting friendly and helpful candidates to support store teams and customers throughout the festive season.

Available shifts will cover early mornings, daytime and evenings, offering flexibility for people balancing work with other commitments.

Successful applicants will join the retailer on one of three start dates: 2 November, 9 November or 16 November. The temporary roles will run until the end of December.

Existing Tesco colleagues who work less than full-time hours will also have the opportunity to take on additional hours during the busy period.

Colleague benefits from day one

Alongside competitive terms and conditions, temporary colleagues will have access to Tesco’s wider colleague reward and benefits package from their first day.

Benefits include a free virtual GP service, providing confidential access to online GP consultations and prescriptions. Family members living at the same address can access the service at a reduced cost.

Colleagues will also have access to complimentary food offerings in colleague rooms across Tesco stores, as well as the retailer’s Wellbeing First Employee Assistance Programme.

The programme provides 24-hour emotional support, counselling and access to wellbeing services for colleagues and their families.

Tesco encourages candidates to apply

Maurice Kelly, people director at Tesco Ireland, said the festive recruitment drive would create opportunities for people across the country while helping the retailer meet increased customer demand.

“Christmas is one of the busiest and most exciting times of the year in our stores, and we’re delighted to be creating 1,725 festive roles across the country this year, an increase of over 600 on last Christmas,” Kelly said.

He added: “Whether people are looking for additional hours over Christmas, returning to work or interested in trying retail for the first time, we’d encourage people to apply and join us for the festive season.

Opportunities for permanent employment

The positions are available nationwide, and Tesco is encouraging interested candidates to apply online as soon as possible.

Following the Christmas period, temporary colleagues will have the opportunity to apply for available permanent positions in existing stores or new Tesco locations planned for the coming year.
