Sean Egan, a 46-year-old Morrisons store manager, has been dismissed following an incident involving a repeat shoplifter at the Swindon branch, an incident that has spurred debate around staff safety and how retailers handle in-store crime, according to the BBC.

The long-serving manager intervened when a known offender was involved in an aggressive theft inside the store.

Physical confrontation

The situation escalated on the shop floor, resulting in a physical confrontation as tensions rose between the individual and staff.

Egan said he stepped in to protect colleagues and customers as the situation became increasingly volatile.

However, Morrisons confirmed that his actions were not in line with company policy, which strictly advises staff not to physically engage with shoplifters under any circumstances.

Like many major retailers, Morrisons operates a “non-confrontation” approach, focusing on staff safety and encouraging employees to de-escalate situations and rely on security teams or law enforcement rather than intervene directly.

The decision has prompted discussion across the retail sector, where rising levels of shoplifting and anti-social behaviour are placing increasing pressure on frontline workers.

Many staff are regularly exposed to challenging and sometimes threatening situations, while still being expected to adhere to strict operational guidelines.

The case has also raised wider questions about whether current policies adequately reflect the realities of the shop floor, particularly as retailers seek to balance loss prevention, customer safety and employee wellbeing in an increasingly difficult trading environment.
