M&M Walshe Holdings Ltd, a family-owned and managed group operating Callan Bacon and RibWorld, has acquired the Worcestershire-based Stirchley Bacon. The group is the largest producer of retail bacon in Ireland, with substantial sales in the UK.

The company describes the acquisition as a major move into the UK foodservice market which also provides a substantial UK presence to help develop Callan Bacon and RibWorld’s existing UK business. It is likewise another step in the company’s strategic growth in new European markets.

Paul Walshe, sales and marketing director, M&M Walshe Group expressed delight at the acquisition. “Bringing a successful brand like Stirchley Bacon on board is an exciting venture for us. The M&M Walshe Group is committed to continuing investment in equipment, innovation and people; we have moved from simply being a processor of pork and bacon to being an expert manufacturer,” he said.

The enlarged group has combined turnover of approximately €120m and employs almost 500 staff. M&M Walshe plan to further strengthen the Stirchley offering and capacity with investment and knowledge sharing.

Stirchley Bacon Co Ltd was founded in 1982 and remained a family owned and operated business quickly establishing a thriving wholesale sliced rasher trade throughout the UK and Europe.  The company currently operates from a 20,000 square foot state-of-the-art purpose built unit in Redditch, Worcestershire now slicing in excess of 140 tonnes weekly.

M&M Walshe operates Callan Bacon, a Kilkenny-based family business with a global profile. Commencing operation in 1924, the company supplies retailers throughout Ireland, the UK and beyond.

RibWorld was acquired by M&M Walshe in 2011. Ribworld has invested over €5 million in its 100,000 square foot A-grade site situated in Fethard, Co Tipperary which opened in February this year. The brand enjoys international success, supplying own-label and premium branded products for retailers and the foodservice industry in Ireland, UK, Europe and Qatar.
