Lidl has confirmed plans to rebuild its store at Fortunestown Lane, Tallaght, which was severely damaged by looters during the extreme weather conditions of Friday, 2 March.

Announcing the news in a press statement this afternoon, the retailer revealed the “building of the new and improved store will commence in the coming weeks, with the new store planned to be open by late summer”.

The Fortunestown store became a national news item following the incident, which saw an “unprecedented” scale of looting take place, according to gardaí.

Lidl announced earlier this month that the building which had its roof ripped off, would be demolished “in the interests of health and safety”.

Lidl also confirmed that the 30 staff members employed at the Tallaght store have been redeployed to other outlets in the interim period, while the retailer is also operating a shuttle bus service to its store at Whitestown Way, Tallaght for local customers in the area who need it.

According to a report in the Journal.ie, it is understood Lidl Ireland had applied for planning permission for the redevelopment of the store on 22 February 2017, to South Dublin County Council. This proposed demolishing the existing single-storey building in order to make way for the construction of a two-storey mono-pitch licensed food store, with an extra 145 car parking spaces.

However Lidl last week said the proposed redevelopment was under review following the events of 2 March.

The retailer praised its “loyal customer base in the Fortunestown area”, stating it has “been blown away by the level of support received from [them] over the past few weeks”.

“We recognise that our service and store team have been greatly missed by the local community over the past few weeks,” a spokesperson said, “and the team look forward to welcoming back our loyal customers once the rebuild is complete.”
