Lidl Ireland recently cut the ribbon on its 100th store featuring Self-Checkout (SCO) technology in Fonthill, marking a major milestone in a rapid modernisation plan across the island of Ireland.
The retailer has moved at a record pace to reach this goal, having started 2025 with just 28 SCO-equipped stores.
This project is part of a total investment exceeding €15 million, aimed at simplifying the checkout experience for both customers and store teams.
Investment
To date, Lidl has invested over €7 million in these upgrades.
The retailer has confirmed that all future store openings will feature SCOs as standard, with a commitment to retrofitting the entire Irish store network by 2027.
The transition to SCO technology is driven by significant improvements in efficiency and customer sentiment.
Data from the rollout shows that customers using self-checkouts are served on average 55% quicker than at traditional manned checkouts (MCO).
This speed has translated into a 9% jump in overall customer experience scores in SCO-equipped stores.
Adoption is high across the country, with 55% of customers now choosing the self-service option for their shopping trips.
Ivan Ryan, chief customer officer, said: “Reaching our 100th SCO store in such a short timeframe is a testament to the hard work of our project and store teams.
“This isn’t just about new equipment; it’s about providing more choice.
“Whether a customer wants the 55% faster self-service experience or the traditional service at our newly upgraded manual tills, we are committed to making the Lidl shop as seamless as possible.”
In addition to digital innovation, Lidl is investing €2.7 million to upgrade traditional manual tills.
New till furniture featuring extended belts and dual packing areas is being rolled out across the country.
These redesigned units provide customers with more space to pack their groceries comfortably, while allowing store assistants to begin serving the next customer immediately, making the process smoother for everyone involved.
Lidl employs 6,000 people across its 190 stores and three regional distribution centres in Mullingar, Charleville and Newbridge and Dublin Head Office.
