Leo Crawford, group chief executive of BWG Group, took over as the new IBEC president from Tom Noonan, chief executive of the Maxol Group.

In his inaugural address at the IBEC President’s Dinner in Mansion House, Dublin, Mr Crawford said immediate action was needed to tackle the serious unemployment problem.

Mr Crawford said: "Unemployment is one of the greatest risks to Irish economic recovery: 439,100 people now find themselves on the Live Register. This is where the energy of Government, unions and businesses must focus.

We must foster an environment for job creation and get Ireland working again.

“Business is the primary creator of jobs, but Government must provide conditions to allow this to happen. A critical next step is a revised capital expenditure programme that prioritises the development of strategic infrastructure, helps sustain and create jobs and incentivises private sector investment.

He said that there was a need to review the cost of employing someone and the interaction between the labour market and the social welfare system. “Otherwise we will not be able to get people back to work in sufficient numbers to make a real dent in the unemployment figures".
