Bewley’s has been awarded one of the world’s largest Fairtrade certified coffee contracts from Cafédirect plc, the UK’s largest 100% Fairtrade company. Under the partnership agreement, Bewley’s will roast over 1,000 tonnes of Fairtrade certified coffee beans from Cafedirect’s smallholder coffee growing partners throughout the world; equivalent to over 85 million cups of Fairtrade coffee a year.

The contract represents the largest ethical coffee deal awarded to an Irish company since Bewley’s first introduced Fairtrade certified coffees to Ireland in 1996. The announcement is seen as a major endorsement of Bewley’s overall ethical procurement initiatives and its strong support for Fairtrade in Ireland.

“We believe it is extremely important to actively support all Fairtrade initiatives, and we are deeply pleased to be associated with Cafédirect, who are true pioneers in the Fairtrade world,” said Siofra Campbell, Bewley’s chairman.

Commenting on the event, Anne MacCaig, CEO Cafédirect, said: “Bewley’s has a long standing policy of direct partnership with coffee growers and is Ireland’s strongest supporter of Fairtrade certified produce.

“Their support of this agenda and strong commitment to quality makes them an ideal partner to roast Cafédirect coffee to perfection. We look forward to a successful partnership that will benefit coffee growers and continue to provide Cafédirect customers with great tasting coffee.”
