Ahead of the 51st Galway Races Festival, sponsored by Guinness, the iconic stout brand has released a short film aiming to capture the significant role that horse racing plays in the Irish psyche, as well as that which the “unsung heroes of the horse racing community” play in making their sport what it is.

Behind Every Great Horse offers an insight into the passion, dedication and hard work that is undertaken by teams across the country in the horse racing industry, from daily life in stables and yards to the preparation by course staff on race day, and everything in between.

The people behind the scenes, the advert says, are the real champions of the sport.

The film features well-known Galway trainer Val O’Brien at his Athenry horse training yard, who said he was proud to be invovled in the short film. “Our yard is representative of the many stables and yards through Ireland that have the same goal as ourselves,” he said, “which is to bring out the potential in every horse.”

Also featured in the short film is the famous Ballybrit Racecourse, home to the €300,000 Guinness Galway Hurdle. “It’s great that Guinness has recognised the huge contribution of the people behind the scenes,” said Michael Moloney, the course director. “Without them the yards, trainers, jockeys, or racecourse could not function.”
