Bord Bia’s annual Food & Drink Awards have taken place, at which Heineken Ireland was named winner of the Sustainability Project Impact Award. The beer giant was recognisedd for its efforts and commitments in sustainability in a number of areas including sourcing, resource efficiency, health and nutrition, supporting local communities, and more.

The win follows the brand’s acquisition last year of the “Business Working Responsibly” mark, the first drinks company in Ireland to receive the mark from trade group Business in the Community. Both milestones were achieved as part of Heineken’s “Brewing a Better World” global sustainability strategy, which was first established more than ten years ago.

The Irish element of Heineken’s Brewing a Better World project has seen the compnay implement a 58% reduction in CO2 production since 2008. Meanwhile, at the brand’s brewery at Leitrim Street in Cork, 100% of the electricy used is derived from renewable source. Furthermore, Heineken is a signatory of Business in the Community’s Low Carbon Pledge, and a founding member of Repak.

Reacting to the win, Kathryn D’Arcy, Heineken’s director of corporate affairs, said the award marks the culmination of years of hard work in sustainability. “The deadline on our current set of sustainability targets is 2020,” she said, “and it is with real pride that we arrive at these deadlines having surpassed several of those targets ahead of time.

“Setting new targets for 2030 has allowed us to renew our commitment and double down on our ambition in sustainability,” D’Arcy added. “To receive this award just as we start out on this phase of our sustainability journey assures us we are on the right path and inspires us to pursue our fresh goals with a renewed sense of determination and possibility.”
