Great Taste Awards 2019: Irish retailers win multiple awards

SuperValu's Signature Tastes Smoked Rack of Bacon was one of the supermarket's dozens of award winners

SuperValu was the top retailer at the recent International Food Awards, winning a masssive 65 awards for its premium and other food ranges. Dunnes Stores was the winner of a coveted three-star award while Centra, Dunnes Stores and Aldi were honoured with major recognitions.

The Great Taste Awards winners for 2019 have been announced by the Guild of Fine Food, honouring the best of food and drink. The awards are widely acknowledged as one of the benchmarks for fine food in Ireland. Ireland’s major supermarket and convenience store brands all scooped multiple awards, with SuperValu coming out as the top performer among them, with a massive 64 wins. In total, SuperValu has won more than 250 Great Taste Awards in recent years.

Some of SuperValu’s offerings that scooped Great Taste Awards include the Signature Tastes Smoked Rack of Bacon, Champagne & Rhubarb Yogurt, Pink Berry & Coconut Crisp Granola and Sicilian Lemon Yogurt.

Meanwhile, for a second year running, Centra has come out on top as the number one convenience retailer at the prestigious Great Taste Awards, receiving 26 accolades in total. The Inspired by Centra Porcini & Truffle Ravioli and the Inspired by Centra Buffalo Mozzarella Ravioli were the star products as both received two-star awards. The Centra Crème Fraiche was awarded two stars for a second time. Not surprisingly, Centra’s multi-award winning Inspired by Centra angus sirloin and striploin steaks also picked up a Great Taste Award 2019.

The Dunnes Stores Simply Better collection was also recognised on an international stage, as the brand took home 34 awards. This marks the fourth year in a row that a product from the collection has been honoured with the highest accolade, the 3 star award, considered similar to “winning an Oscar” in the food world. Just 2% of products adjudicated on recieve a three-star award. The coveted 3 Stars were awarded to the Dunnes Stores Simply Better Free Range Ibérico Rack of Pork, which is exclusively sourced from the Iberian Peninsula region of Southern Spain.

Established in 1994, the Great Taste Awards are internationally recognised as the benchmark for fine food and drink and are one of the most respected awards in the world. This year, almost 13,000 products were blind-tasted by a panel of over 500 industry experts, including acclaimed chefs, restaurateurs and food critics, to find the best tasting entries.

Aldi was also a major winner at the event, with no fewer than fouru of its own-brand products winning the three-star award – more than any other retailer. In total, Aldi took home 62 Great Taste awards.

The Aldi products that won the three-star awads were Specially Selected Irish Free-Range Whole Goose, its Roadworks IPA, and two of its Specially Selected Infusions Teas.

John Curtin, Aldi’s Group Buying Director, welcomed the awards wins. “It’s a great achievement for four of our own-brand products to win the top three gold stars award in the same year,” he said. “Our customers trust our winning combination of quality and price.”
