Global Convention comes to Dublin
A global convention on craft brewing & distilling will be held in Ireland in Dublin’s Convention Centre this July.
14 June 2013
Hosted by the Alltech, it consists of the Brewing & Distilling Academy on the 17th & 18th July followed by the International Brewing and Distilling Convention on the 19th & 20th.
Alltech, owned by its president and founder, Irishman Dr Pearse Lyons, is primarily involved in the development of innovative, natural, animal feed by exploring the potential of yeast cultures to boost performance in animals (naturally).
A native of Dundalk, Co Louth, five generations of Pearse’s family worked as coopers, supplying barrels to distilleries in Ireland and he spent his early years as an intern at both the Guinness and Harp Lager breweries.
He later became the first Irishman to achieve a formal degree in brewing and distilling from the British School of Malting and Brewing, a school with more than 100 years of history.
In 2000, Pearse acquired Lexington Brewing and Distilling in Kentucky which now produces award-winning beers and spirits.
Last year marked the grand opening of Alltech’s $9.2 million Town Branch Distillery, the first new distillery in downtown Lexington in more than a century.
Academy
Alltech’s Brewing & Distilling Academy – which runs on 17th & 18th July – was established to provide craft brewers and distillers with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and hone their skills.
Ordinarily held in Kentucky, the Academy will be held here next month in association with The Gathering to co-incide with The International Craft Brewing & Distilling Convention at Dublin’s Convention Centre.
The two-day Academy programme has been designed to provide in-depth technical workshops covering:
* Laboratory set up; concepts and techniques of laboratory analysis
• Brewing microbiology; yeast and fermentation
• Beer and spirit stability; particular to speciality brewing
• Sanitation and cleaning; best practice
• Draft beer systems; filtration, carbonation, nitrogen – functionality of system types
• Sensory sessions; evaluation and judging of beer and spirits
Being brought to Ireland for the first time to coincide with The Gathering, The Academy is an education based, highly specialised event, exclusively limited to 150 attendees (filled on a first-come-first-served basis) and represents advanced learning for brewers and distillers.
Convention
The International Brewing and Distilling Convention will take place June 19 – 20, gathering trade exhibitors, food pairing experts, world renowned beer judges and international trade professionals under one roof. Focusing on the needs and trends in the craft brewing and distilling industry, the Convention is aimed at practicing brewers, distillers and enthusiasts.
Brewing and Distilling Programme
A full programme of educational talks and demonstrations over the two days will cover the basics of brewing and distilling, how a barrel is made, and how to launch, market and make money from your final product.
Dublin Craft Beer Cup
Brew will be pitted against brew in seven different categories, with local breweries going head to head with the best craft beers across the globe. Entries will be sorted into their respective categories and a winner will be chosen by a panel of judges, selected from the ranks of the brewing industry.
Food Pairing
Restaurateurs are turning away from wine more and more and pairing their dishes with beers and spirits. To give brewers and distillers that extra edge, the convention will also feature a food pairing section where experts in the field will demonstrate how to effectively pair a beer or spirit with certain foods.
Entrepreneur Seminar
Taking place on Friday 19th, this seminar will provide an insight into the rules of successful entrepreneurship – how to grow a business, reach new audiences and develop new technologies and talents – and is a must for all budding entrepreneurs.
