Gala Retail has been presented with one of the most prestigious awards in the business world, at the Chambers Ireland Corporate Social Responsibility Awards. Gala’s ongoing partnership with Special Olympics Ireland was singled out for recognition, whereupon the award for Excellence in Community for Partnership with a Charity was bestowed on the nationwide convenience retailer. Gala Retail was up against some steep competition on the night, which included A&L Goodbody, Dalata Hotel Group and Primark also amongst the eight shortlisted entries in the category.

Gala’s ongoing five-year year platinum partnership with Special Olympics Ireland supports 8,000 Irish athletes in Special Olympics clubs, helping them to train, compete and grow. For many athletes, Gala Retail’s input has helped them to realise their dream of representing Ireland at the Special Olympics World Summer Games.

Gary Desmond, CEO of Gala Retail, said Gala Retail is immensely proud of its relationship with Special Olympics Ireland.

“Many Gala retailers have forged connections with their local clubs and athletes, because Special Olympics Ireland is an organisation that provides athletes with far more than just the physical benefits of sport” Desmond said. “As a community-centric convenience retailer, our collective efforts to support Special Olympics Ireland has helped the organisation to continue to changes lives.

“Winning such a prestigious award is incredible for the Gala Group,” he added, “and it’s a testament to the efforts of our wholesalers and stores for really engaging with this sponsorship.

“This success is also thanks to the exceptional support of the team from Special Olympics Ireland,” he added.

This sixteenth annual Chambers Ireland CSR Awards ceremony was run in association with the Department of Rural and Community Development, partnered with Business in the Community Ireland and kindly sponsored by BAM Ireland. Boots Ireland was awarded with the Outstanding Achievement in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award.

The Chambers Ireland Corporate Social Responsibility Awards were established in 2004 to recognise the work being carried out by Irish and multinational companies to improve the lives of their employees and to enhance the civic environment in which they operate.
