Retail sales from SuperValu’s Food Academy producers are expected to top €25 million in 2016, the retailer announced at the Cork and Kerry Food Forum.

As regular readers will know, the Food Academy programme is a partnership initiative between SuperValu, Bord Bia and the Local Enterprise Offices (LEO) network, that works with small food businesses from start-up to getting their products onto supermarket shelves.

Thousands attended the Cork and Kerry Food Forum, a free two-day event between 26-27 June at City Hall Cork with more than 70 local exhibitors and 5,000 visitors on its first day alone. Featuring one of the largest artisan food markets in Ireland, its goal was to showcase the quality of produce available in the region – supported by a partnership of the LEOs in Cork and Kerry, Cork City Council, Cork County Council, Kerry County Council, SuperValu and Bord Bia.

At the event, Martin Kelleher, SuperValu managing director, pointed out that 281 Food Academy producers currently sell their products in SuperValu stores, and these producers support more than 900 jobs nationally. With sales expected to exceed €25 million in 2016, he said SuperValu was delighted to support such companies, noting, “small food businesses play a vital role in the Irish economy”.

SuperValu had a noticeable presence at the event, with 37 Food Academy producers exhibiting their ranges. What’s more, guest chefs who gave demonstrations included SuperValu Good Food Karma ambassadors David and Stephen Flynn of The Happy Pear and Kevin Dundon.
