In the last two years under lockdown, cooking and dining al fresco gained serious momentum. As consumers enjoyed staycations and entertained in their gardens, Kantar reported a boost in sales of many barbeque essentials, reflecting the popularity and enthusiasm for barbecuing across Ireland. In the 12 weeks to 8 August 2021, Irish consumers spent €7.7 million more on soft drinks, €664,000 more on savoury snacks, and €579,000 extra on chilled burgers and grilling meats.

New research suggests many consumers are becoming ever-more ambitious and adventurous with their BBQ favourites and a new generation of pit masters are taking cooking over live fire to the next level this summer.

A 2021 UK study by meat probe, Thermapen, showed people are showing off their expertise by barbequing home marinated pork ribs (54%), lamb koftas (44%) and beef short ribs (43%) as well as T-bone steaks (42%), homemade burgers (41%) and sirloin steaks (39%).

Thermapen’s research also found this summer’s outdoor soirees are likely to include flatbreads (36%), chorizo sausages (35%) and spatchcock chickens (34%). And the more health conscious will rejoice as this year’s BBQ also has a place for vegan burgers and sausages (28%), sea bass (20%) and whole shell on prawns (18%).

And while ketchup still reigns supreme as the nation’s favourite barbecue condiment (74%), 52% are opting for chilli sauce, while 22% like to serve salsa verde and 18% can’t resist adding sriracha to their plate.

Ireland’s top takeaway in a bottle

New Heinz Taco Sauce offers the perfect tasty takeaway sauce, always just a squeeze away

Say hola to new Heinz Taco Sauce. Or Salsa Para Tacos, as they say in Mexico.

Bringing the tongue-tingling spicy and garlicky flavours of Mexico and the taste of Ireland’s favourite sauce to tables at home, this takeaway favourite is perfectly enjoyed dolloped on top of your fakeaway taco fries, generously lashed over chicken fillet roll, or – crazy, we know – even served up on top of homemade tacos.

Heinz’s new launch comes as recent data has shown a surge in the popularity of takeaways across Ireland since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, with a staggering 140% increase in Deliveroo orders in Dublin alone and Mexican food becoming the most popular takeaway favourite in the capital*.

“Since 1869, Heinz has been pioneering when it comes to launching new recipes, and being inspired by recipes from across the world,” says Elaine McCague, senior commercial & marketing manager at Kraft Heinz. “We’re incredibly excited to be continuing our founder, Henry J. Heinz’s journey over 150 years later by launching Heinz’s very first Taco Sauce here in Ireland!

“Our new recipe, inspired by the tastes of Mexico and packing a punch with chillies and scotch bonnet flavours, is giving Irish consumers everything they’ve ever wanted from a taco sauce, and is just one of several innovation plans and launches we have coming up here at Heinz,” she adds.

“As food tastes continue to evolve across the country and the globe, we want to make sure that we have lots of exciting and delicious treats in store. So, keep your eyes peeled – and tastebuds ready – for what else we have to come.”

Available now in SuperValu and Tesco nationwide (RRP: €1.99), new Heinz Taco Sauce first launched just ahead of Cinco de Mayo (5th May), the global celebration of all things Mexican and delicious Mexican food, including of course the flavoursome taco spices you’ll find in Heinz Taco Sauce.

Covid-19 has had an impact on all our lives and more importantly made us re-evaluate the important things in life, such as spending quality time with loved ones. During lockdown we mostly turned to cooking and baking, DIY and home improvements, which included investing in our outdoor space with new furniture, heating and BBQs. As lockdown measures ease and life slowly starts to return to a new normal, outdoor dining / living is expected to become an important part of family life and as BBQs play a huge part in this, Zip has made sure it has all your BBQ needs covered.

Zip offers sustainably produced coconut charcoal in 3kg bags and disposable instant light BBQs, alongside the original and best Zip High Performance Firelighters, and this year it has introduced an Odourless Firelighter specifically for BBQs. There really is something for everyone.

While many people associate BBQing with burgers and sausages, Zip has created a plethora of unique recipe videos to cook on a BBQ, especially for social media platforms to show customers that you really can cook everything on a BBQ.  It has also included some handy tips and hints to help both the beginners and the seasoned professionals.

For any of our customers who do like to BBQ, Zip always encourages responsible grilling, mindful of the environment. As Zip is so passionate about this, it has launched a ‘Responsible Grilling’ campaign to promote barbecuing with care and safety.  The new Responsible Grilling logo features on all summer seasonal products and on Zip’s social media platforms which will be playing its Responsible Grilling safety video. A dedicated web page on the Zip website is also coming soon.

For retailers, Zip also has a range of eye-catching point of sale (POS) materials to help drive footfall and sales.
