Ireland’s non-alcoholic beer market is growing rapidly – with sales of non-alcoholic beer growing by 25% in 2024 – but remains dominated by a small number of established global beer brands.

Heineken 0.0 alone holds a 43.2% share of the Irish non-alcoholic beer market, according to Heineken Ireland’s Always a Choice: How Socialising is Changing in Ireland report, published in September 2025.

Against that backdrop, independent Irish brewery Fierce Mild is taking on Heineken 0.0 with its new Lively Lager and “Ask for the Irish One” campaign, challenging drinkers to look beyond the default choice when ordering an alcohol-free beer.

The scale of the challenge is clear. KUBI Insights research in 2025 found awareness of Heineken 0.0 at 91%, compared with just 4% for Fierce Mild – highlighting the gulf in recognition between the global beer giant and the independent Co. Louth brewery.

Fierce Mild is putting that challenge into practice with a mobile billboard promoting its new Lively Lager as it tours high-profile locations across Dublin, taking the campaign onto Heineken territory – including Burgh Quay, where the giant Heineken sign on O’Connell Bridge House has dominated the city skyline for decades.

The activation brings a homegrown independent alternative directly alongside one of the biggest names in beer, with campaign messages including “Go Dutch for Dinner. Not for Your Beer.” and “ZER0.0 Choice. Until Now.”

The campaign challenges a familiar behaviour at the bar: drinkers asking simply for “a non-alc” and taking whatever happens to be available, rather than actively choosing the beer they want.

“We’re asking people to ask what else is available – and to Ask for the Irish One,” said Fergal Carroll, co-founder of Fierce Mild.

The independent Irish challenger

The Irish non-alcoholic beer category has become increasingly established, but its growth has largely benefited the biggest and most familiar beer brands.

Heineken 0.0 is the market leader in Ireland’s non-alcoholic beer category, with a 43.2% share, while Guinness is identified as the No. 2 non-alcoholic beer brand in Ireland.

Fierce Mild believes there is room for greater choice – and is looking to earn its place in the category by competing on taste, quality and character.

“People will often still come to the bar and ask for ‘a non-alc’, but that’s starting to change.

“As the category grows and there’s more choice available, we’re seeing people become much more particular about what they want to drink,” said Micheál O’Brien, The Animal Collective Bar Group.

“We’re focused on making a beer people genuinely want to drink – and giving them an Irish alternative when they ask for one,” said Cathal Byrne, co-founder of Fierce Mild.

Lively Lager: the Irish alternative

Lively Lager is Fierce Mild’s first non-alcoholic lager and was developed from the outset as a beer in its own right, rather than as an alcohol-free version of an existing beer.

The new Irish-brewed alcohol-free pilsner-style beer is designed to give lager drinkers another option – a beer brewed in Ireland to deliver the flavour and experience of a proper lager, without the alcohol.

Brewed from start-to-finish in Ireland using just four natural ingredients – water, malt, hops and yeast – Lively Lager undergoes traditional lager fermentation, gentle alcohol removal and extended cold conditioning to deliver a crisp, refreshing, full-flavoured lager experience without the need for additives, preservatives or flavourings.

Alcohol-free beer moves into the mainstream

The campaign comes as alcohol-free beer continues to gain momentum across Ireland and Europe.

While overall EU beer consumption declined by 3.2% in 2025, non-alcoholic beer volumes grew by 5.9% according to European Beer Trends 2026 from The Brewers of Europe.

Since 2020, non-alcoholic beer volumes have increased by more than 38%, and one in every 12 beers consumed across the EU is now non-alcoholic.

In Ireland, non-alcoholic beer sales grew by 25% in 2024, as the category becomes an increasingly established part of Irish drinking culture.

Despite that growth, the Irish category remains heavily weighted towards alcohol-free extensions of established global beer brands.

KUBI Insights research in 2025 found awareness of Heineken 0.0 at 91%, compared with 4% for Fierce Mild.

Fierce Mild intends to close in on that gap – building recognition for an independent Irish non-alcoholic brewery as more consumers actively choose alcohol-free beer.

Small brewery, big credentials

Lively Lager builds on the success of Fierce Mild’s flagship Extra Pale Ale (XPA), which has already established the brewery’s credentials in alcohol-free beer.

The XPA was named Best Irish Drink at the 2026 Irish Food Writers’ Guild Awards, following Gold wins at Blas na hÉireann and the Irish Quality Food & Drink Awards in 2025. The Irish Times drinks columnist John Wilson described it as “the best alcohol-free beer I have tasted”, noting that it was drunk year-round in the Wilson household.

Founded in 2022 by childhood friends and brothers-in-law Fergal Carroll and Cathal Byrne, Fierce Mild is an independent Co. Louth brewery dedicated exclusively to non-alcoholic beer.

Its range is now available through more than 600 venues and stockists nationwide, with national distribution in place through Classic Drinks.

As Ireland’s alcohol-free category grows, Fierce Mild is looking to prove there’s room for an independent Irish non-alcoholic brewery to compete for drinkers’ attention alongside the biggest names in the category.
