Bulmers Ltd was awarded Bord Bia’s ‘Home Grown’ Award at this year’s Food and Drink Industry Awards 2009, presented by Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr Brendan Smith TD.

The Home Grown Award recognizes companies that have adapted and innovated in the light of changed economic circumstances, delivering innovative products and effective marketing strategies. Bulmers Ltd won the award for Bulmers Pear, the company’s first departure from apple cider. In the five months since the launch, Bulmers Pear has generated €11 million worth of consumer sales between the on and off-trade (Source: Nielsen March-July 09).

Speaking at the awards, Dan Browne, chairman, Bord Bia said: “The creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit shown by this year’s winners reflect the capacity and determination of the Irish food industry to address the hugely challenging environment that is today’s marketplace. It also demonstrates, as we emerge from the downturn, how the industry can position itself for growth and, notwithstanding current difficulties, play a key role in the country’s economic recovery.”

Receiving the award, Anne Hogan, Bulmers brand manager, said: “We are delighted to receive the Home Grown award for the success of new Bulmers Pear. With Bulmers Original being Ireland’s number one cider for over a decade and Bulmers Pear the number one pear cider in Ireland, it is clear that Irish consumers have embraced Bulmers Pear.”
