Aldi has overtaken upmarket rival Waitrose to become the sixth largest grocer in the UK.

Aldi achieved a 5.3% share in the 12 weeks to 29 March in the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel, after boosting sales by 16.8% during the period.

Waitrose saw sales lift by 2.9% to achieve a 5.1% market share.

In the same period, Tesco saw growth of 0.3% to give it a 28.4% share, while Sainsbury’s lifted sales by 0.2% to a 16.4% market share. But Asda saw sales fall by 1.1% to a 17.1% share, while sales at Morrisons fell 0.7% to a 10.9% slice.

Rival discounter Lidl saw its sales jump 12.1% over the period to a 3.7% market share.

In the Irish market, Aldi holds 8.1% of the market with Lidl trailing behind at 7.6%.
