Aldi  is introducing a new click and collect service to allow customers to order their shopping online at least one day, and up to one week, prior to picking it up for a fee of €4.99.

The service is just launching this week initially in its Sallynoggin store in south county Dublin. However the company intends for it to be rolled out to as many as 15 more stores across the country over the coming months including other areas of Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway.

According to group managing director Niall O’Connor, they will develop it depending on demand. In an interview with The Irish Times, he said “If the demand is that it should be in every store, we’d look at that. We are open minded”.

O’Connor said the service will be “contactless” in order to keep staff and customers safe. When a customer arrives at a participating Aldi store at their allotted time to pick up their shopping, they will text a number supplied to them at the time of booking and park in a selected bay. This will alert a member of staff to bring the pre-packed order out to the customer’s car.

This marks the first foray into e-commerce for Aldi in Ireland. The discounter introduced a limited home delivery service last year in partnership with Deliveroo, with about 400 Aldi products but this new click and collect service required a newly built in-house transactional website, which will sell almost all of the 1,800 products available in its stores except its centre aisle special offers.
