BWG Group has agreed terms to acquire Co. Sligo-based Tuffy Wholesale Ltd, a long-established family-run wholesaler supplying the grocery retail, licensed trade and foodservice sectors in Ireland, and a member of the Gala Retail Group.

A spokesperson for BWG Group told ShelfLife: “The business has built a very strong presence across the west of Ireland over many years and its customer base would complement our existing operations across that region.”

As the transaction is subject to approval from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, BWG Group added that it “will not be commenting further at this time”.

A family business since 1950, when it was founded by Padraic Tuffy, over the years Tuffy Wholesale grew substantially and the premises was extended on many occasions to cater for the increased need for storage space. Adjoining land was purchased and new facilities built.

Padraic Tuffy retired from the business when he had a severe stroke in 1996. Two of his sons, Brian and Seamus were working in the business at that time and they, together with John, continue to run the business.

In March 2013, when the Ballina premises burned to the ground, the company was able to continue to service the customers using the facilities of its subsidiary company, Clonlara Wholesale Distributors Ltd , in County Clare. The company then moved to its current location in June 2013 – a 60,000sq ft. warehouse in Collooney, Co. Sligo from which it continues to trade.

Today, The Tuffy Group states that it “has seen many changes in the industry but by keeping the firm family values of outstanding service and quality products, we continue to grow and maintain our place as an outstanding choice for our customers needs”.
