Vladimir Rybnicky, a second year brewing and distilling undergraduate at Institute of Technology Carlow, is the fourth recipient of the annual Walsh Whiskey €1,000 bursary.

The prize is awarded by Walsh Whiskey (producers of Writers’ Tears & The Irishman premium whiskeys) to the student with the highest first year grades in the Bachelor of Science in Brewing & Distilling course at Institute of Technology Carlow. The four-year course was the first of its kind in Ireland when initiated in 2017.

Bernard Walsh, co-founder and managing director of Walsh Whiskey, presented the bursary cheque to Rybnicky and addressed the second year undergraduate Brewing & Distilling class at Institute of Technology Carlow.

“We congratulate Vladimir for his excellent results which saw him achieve the highest GPA score, not only in the brewing & distilling exams, but also across the entire science programmes,” Bernard Walsh said.

“Walsh Whiskey is strongly committed to supporting the development of the next generation of Irish whiskey distillers.

“The Irish whiskey category weathered the pandemic storm and bounced back strongly to prove it is both globally resilient and a very good career choice for these undergraduates,” he added.

“IT Carlow would like to sincerely thank Walsh Whiskey for its continued support for Ireland’s first honours degree course in brewing and distilling,” said Dr David Ryan, programme director for the degree course at Institute of Technology Carlow.

“The industry in Ireland continues to go from strength to strength with huge opportunities for our graduates, and all of our inaugural graduating class are already working in an amazing range of exciting roles, both in Ireland and abroad,” Dr Ryan added. “We continue to work closely with employers to ensure that all graduates from the programme directly meet the requirements of their future employers, but are also in a position to enter a research career or start up their own venture.

“In addition, our degree is one of only four programmes in the world to have achieved professional recognition from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD).  For anyone interested in this course, I invite them to visit our website and look for programme code CW128.”

Launched in 2017, the four-year Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Brewing & Distilling was developed by Institute of Technology Carlow following significant research and consultation with industry, representative organisations, national bodies and government. The programme has received huge support from the industry.
