Fitting tribute paid to much-loved Greystones retailer
A 60 seconds' silence was held throughout town for retailer who spent 62 years serving her local community at Mooney's Newsagents

A minute’s silence was held in Greystones, Co. Wicklow on Friday afternoon for local retailer Bridie Mooney, a woman held in high esteem throughout the town.
Bridie’s friend and local salon owner Susan Collins suggested that all businesses down tools for 60 seconds to remember Bridie, following her funeral at Holy Rosary Church – a fitting tribute to a woman who spent 62 years serving the community at her newsagents store on Trafalgar Road.
Following the minute’s silence, there was a spontaneous round of applause for Bridie, who is fondly remembered by customers of all ages; with those who are now adults remembering how she always kept them topped up with fizzle sticks and gobstoppers! In fact, baskets of free Haribo sweets were even available at Bridie’s funeral.
At the funeral mass, local publication, the GreystonesGuide.ie reports that Bridie’s grandchildren shared their “memories about a grandmother who taught them all about white lies, maths, pleading innocent, and how two bottles of sunscreen was hardly enough for one person”.
The Irish Times was also in attendance on the day.
Describing the spontaneous round of applause which followed the silence, the Greystones Guide aptly summed up the mood: “Bridie was never one for being quiet. Joy is what she was all about, and this sudden surge of clapping fit the day perfectly.”
