Retail NI has condemned the attempted ATM robbery that took place yesterday morning, against one of its members in Ballynahinch, Co. Down.

Retail NI has condemned the attempted ATM robbery that took place earlier this week in Co. Down. Carlisle’s of Ballynahinch, Co. Down was targetted in a dawn raid that resulted in extensive damage to the forecourt premises. The business which is one of the town’s main employers, remains closed.

In addition, an ATM was stolen from Knockbracken Health centre and an unsuccessful attempt was also made to steal one in Belfast City Hospital.

Retail NI chief executive Glyn Roberts said that words fail him in describing the robbery. “This has caused extensive damage to one of Ballynahinch’s largest retailers in the run up to Christmas,” he said. “This is an independent retailer, who provides an invaluable service to the local community, awakened from his sleep to be told his business is smashed up.

“It is also a new low for these robbers to attack health centres to steal ATMs,” he added.

“We urge all businesses and organisations who have external ATMs to be vigilant,” he added, “and urge members of the public with any information to contact the PSNI.”
