Maxol’s IURU rugby tournament takes place in Belfast
Maxol has continued its sponsorship of the Irish Universities Rugby Union tournament, which took place in Belfast this week. One of the longest-running sponsorship deals in Irish rugby, the championship was won by Ireland Students, who defeated Scottish Students in a thrilling final.

Maxol has marked its 27-year partnership with Irish Universities Rugby Union tournament, one of the longest-running sponsorships in the game. The aim of the tournament is to promote the growth of rugby in third level institutions, by maximising opportunity, participation and accessibility to the game for all players regardless of age, gender or standard.
Ireland Students were the victors in the tournament, recording an impressive 31-3 win over Scottish Students in a resilient performance at Dub Lane in Belfast, home of Queen’s University RFC. Queen’s was chosen to host the 2018 event as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations.
Maxol CEO Brian Donaldson was in attendance, and paid tribute to the Irish side for its win. “This was a great performance from an incredibly strong Ireland student team,” he said. “It was thrilling to watch third level students from all over the country come together to get the win.”
The IURU works on a voluntary basis to support young people in pursuit of rugby. “The grassroots and inclusive nature of this work really appeals to Maxol’s brand ethos, which is firmly rooted in the community,” Donaldson added.
Former Irish international and British and Irish Lion and president of the IURU, Trevor Ringland, said that voluntary organisations like the IURU need sponsors like Maxol. “We all have a role to play in the development of our young people through sport and physical activity,” Ringland said. “Maxol’s support over the past 27 years has been invaluable.”
