South Dublin town sees fourth break-in in two weeks

Kennedy’s Centra in Stepaside has become the latest store to be broken into within the South Dublin town during the past fortnight.

The Irish Independent reports owner Des Kennedy was woken up after 4am this morning by a call from the guards informing him of the incident.

The store owner described the break-in as particularly devastating given that the store had just celebrated its 60^th anniversary.

The store’s windows were smashed in and a sum of money was taken during the raid.

“I’m absolutely shaking from it,” Kennedy told the newspaper, before adding that while his team were “absolutely devastated”, they hoped to have the shop “back up and running this morning”.

A number of high-profile politicians have expressed their dismay at the theft and support for the popular retailer.

Minister Josepha Madigan said she was “saddened and angry to see another shop has been broken into overnight.

“Such despicable acts of thuggery in a lovely village like this is disturbing,” the Minister added.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Shane Ross visited the Centra this morning and posted on Twitter: “Outside Des Kennedy’s Stepaside shop after 4am break-in last night. Typically Des reacted ‘At least no one in the community was hurt.'”

Three businesses were affected by an early morning raid in the town on 6 November. These included Flemings Butcher shop, Simply Fresh fruit and vegetables, and Borza take-away.

Gardaí confirmed a man in his 20s was brought before the Central Criminal Court in connection to these three burglaries on 6 November, and the charged the following day.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing into the theft at Kennedy’s Centra.
