Honorary statue unveiled at Obama Plaza
The visit of Barack and Michelle Obama to the former US president's ancestral home in Co. Offaly was marked once again this week with the unveiling of a statue in honour of the couple.

The popular Barack Obama Plaza service station and food court, so named in honour of the former US president’s visit to his ancestral home in Offaly in 2011, is back in the news this week with the unveiling of a statue of the Obamas, Barack and Michelle. Cody Keenan, a speechwriter for Obama during his time in office, spoke at the unveiling and reiterated how honoured the Obamas were at the welcome they received in Offaly and Dublin at the time.
Ciaran Cannon, Minister for the Diaspora and International development, shared this photo of Keenan posing with the statue alongside Supermac’s MD Pat McDonagh.
The Barack Obama Plaza is a popular stop on the M7 motorway, with a wide range of food-court and retail options, as well as a visitors’ centre commemorating the visit. The statues now provide another reason to visit and will surely become a common sight on social media as travellers take a moment to pose with the US president and his wife!
