Irish brands triumph at 2017 Great Taste Awards

Great Taste is the world’s largest and most trusted food and drink awards initiative, whose highly respected seal of approval is recognised globally.  This year, a panel of 500 industry experts were tasked to judge 12,366 top quality products, to which they awarded 4,347 star ratings.

Tesco Ireland wins 30 Great Taste Awards

Tesco Ireland walked away with an impressive 30 prizes at the 2017 Great Taste Awards. Spanning multiple categories, Tesco own-label products were awarded across grocery, meat, fish and poultry, bakery, chilled convenience and beers, wines and spirits. The grocery giant says it is particularly proud of the win for its Tesco finest* Canadian Maple smoked dry cured Irish rashers, along with the Tesco finest* Irish pork sausages. Lidl thrilled with Craft Beer win

Tesco weren’t the only ones all smiles at the Great Taste Awards.

Meanwhile, Lidl was awarded 3 gongs at the prestigious event, for its products by the Crafty Brewing Company. Crafty Brewing Comnpany Irish Stout was awarded 2 stars, while the Crafty Brewing Company Irish Lager, and Irish Red Ale, were each awarded 1 star. Overall, Lidl took away 31 awards at the Great Taste Awards.

Aldi’s Kilcree Gold Manuka Honey beats big brands at Great Taste Awards 

You guessed it, Aldi took home more than a few accolades at this year’s Great Taste Awards too! Its own-brand Kilcree Gold Manuka Honey, supplied by Mileeven Honey of Piltown, Co Kilkenny, beat a host of leading big brands at the event to receive a three gold stars rating – the highest accolade possible at the Awards. The award-winning honey is available for €8.29 / 220g at Aldi’s 129 Irish stores – a fraction of the cost of branded products. Aldi’s products picked up a total of 33 titles at the Great Taste Awards.

ABP Ireland Reaches For the Stars

ABP Ireland was awarded 21 stars at the event. As part of a highly impressive total of eighteen awards ABP Ireland received two stars awards for three of its products: Tipperary Gold Dry Aged Certified Irish Angus Rib Eye Joint, Platinum Prime Certified Irish Shorthorn Rib Eye Steaks, and Lomo Extra Maturado. The company also received 14 one star awards for products including: Platinum Prime Certified Irish Dexter Striploin Steaks, Tipperary Gold Dry Aged Certified Irish Hereford Striploin Joint, Tipperary gold Dry Aged Certified Irish Hereford Rib Eye Joint, Platinum Prime Certified Irish Dexter Rib Eye Steaks, Platinum Prime Certified Irish Dexter Fillet Joint, Platinum Prime Certified Irish Shorthorn Fillet joint and Certified Irish Angus Sirloin Steak.

Bewley’s Shines Once Again 

Not to be outdone, iconic hot beverage producer Bewley’s scooped a total of 29 Gold Stars. Among the winners were Bewley’s Earl Grey Pyramid Teabags with 2 stars and Bewley’s Fairtrade Gold Roast Fresh Ground Coffee, Bewley’s Dublin Morning Tea and Bewley’s Indulgent Drinking Chocolate all achieving 1 star, along with 21 other Bewley’s products.

SuperValu scoops 31

SuperValu were also big winners this year, taking home an impressive 31 awards. SuperValu Crème Fraiche, available in SuperValu stores nationwide, was awarded three gold stars, making it the highest ranked own brand product by an Irish retailer. SuperValu continues to enjoy strong success at The Great Taste Awards, with over 100 accolades received in the last three years alone.
