Paying by card in pubs just got quicker – with a new partnership that sees BOI Payment Acceptance (BOIPA) become the preferred payments platform for the Licensed Vintners Association’s 600 Dublin pubs and bars.

The LVA, which will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2017, represents 85% of all pubs and bars in the Dublin and Bray region, who together sell a quarter of all licensed alcohol in Ireland.

Since entering the market just two years ago, BOIPA has provided card payment and contactless facilities for many of Dublin’s leading pubs, bars and nightclubs.

Cashless transactions in Ireland are currently valued at over €35 billion. Both merchants and consumers have been quick to recognise the convenience of contactless payment, which allows virtually instantaneous purchases of up to €30 with a quick tap of the card.

Describing the LVA as “the backbone of Dublin’s nightlife”, Brian Cleary, managing director of BOI Payment Acceptance UK and Ireland, noted that the association’s 600 members, “join a network of over 35,000 Irish businesses and organisations currently benefiting from contactless technology”.

Donall O’Keefe, chief executive of the LVA added that the new partnership gives members “a very competitive offering, backed up with a great support infrastructure”.

Outlining the advantages from the publican’s perspective, John Gleeson of Gleeson’s of Booterstown, noted: “In the last two years, cashless has become the preferred method of payment for our customers. With contactless technology, we’re now able to serve more customers in a shorter amount of time, enjoy reduced cash handling costs and minimise our vulnerability to theft as a result of having less cash on the premises. For our punters, this Christmas, contactless means faster service and less time spent queuing at the bar for drinks.”
