It’s always nice to report good news for the industry, and there is positivity in Newbridge, Co. Kildare this week at the creation of 70 new jobs with the opening of a brand new SuperValu store which opened this past week. The €2.2m, 13,000 sq ft store is owned and operated by local businessman Andrew Cross, who already owns three retail store in the Kildare area – Centra Hazelmere in Naas, Centra Roseberry Hill in Newbridge and Centra Hillside Kilcullen. All three of Cross’s Centra stores hold the “Excellence Ireland Emerald Award” for best practice in food retail, so it’s safe to say the new SuperValu is in good hands.

“I am very proud to be generating employment and helping to boost the area with this new store,” Cross said at the store opening. “Crosses have been supporting the Kildare community for the past 24 years and we’re delighted to further demonstrate our confidence in the local economy in partnering with SuperValu.”

The new store boasts a fresh meat counter, a fish counter, bakery, hot food deli and an off-license, as well as the Food Academy range, which showcases emerging food producers. The store, located on the Athgarvan Road, also offers an online shopping service and home delivery options.

At the grand opening, Martin Kelleher, SuperValu managing director, cited the new opening as demonstrating the strength of SuperValu’s independent community retail model. SuperValu serves around 2.6m customers in 222 stores nationwide every week, helping to sustain 30,000 jobs in the Irish economy.
