Diageo to cease operations at its Waterford Brewery
Following a review of its operations Diageo Ireland has decided to cease operations at its Waterford site by the end of this year.

In continuing to review how best it can ensure the long-term sustainability and global competitiveness of its brewing operations in Ireland the brewery is to transfer all of its Waterford operations onto one site at St James’s Gate and to upgrade its facility there.
The company is to engage in formal consultation with the relevant representative bodies on the implementation of the proposal but it’s proposed that operations at the Waterford site will fully cease at the end of 2013.
Diageo announced an investment of €153 million investment into St James’s Gate in January last year. This is to be increased by €16 million to facilitate the transfer of production from the Waterford site.
Diageo currently employs 21 people on the site and is fully committed to identifying opportunities for the Waterford facility. It has already begun work with the State Authorities including Enterprise Ireland.
Waterford is one of two Diageo plants in Ireland producing GFE (Guinness Flavour Essence), the special ingredient known as the essence of Guinness which gives Guinness its unique flavour and aroma wherever it is brewed or consumed. This essence is exported to 49 markets, to Guinness breweries worldwide, ensuring that every keg contains consistent flavour, aroma and taste.
It’s proposed that GFE production will switch towards the end of 2013 to Diageo’s facility at St James’s Gate facility.
