Tesco is due to create almost 750 jobs with the opening of seven new stores and one store redevelopment amounting to an investment of €113m. The new stores will open over the next year in Kinnegad, Co Westmeath, with the creation of 80 jobs, in Oranmore, Co Galway with 110 jobs, in Swinford, Co Mayo with 90 positions, and  110 staff in Ballybeg, Co Waterford.

An outlet in Thomas Street, Dublin, will employ 16 staff, a store in Kimmage, Dublin, will employ 16 workers and Tesco will recruit for 266 positions at its new store in Naas, Co Kildare. The replacement of a store in Roscrea, Tipperary, will result in 60 additional jobs.

Tony Keohane, chief executive of Tesco Ireland, said the investment would create jobs at a difficult time. “There will be a significant boost in local employment in terms of 748 new jobs at a time when Ireland needs to get people into work,” he said.

Although many will see the expansion of Tesco stores as a threat to their own businesses, Trade Minister Batt O’Keeffe said the investment would boost the economic recovery and prospects for growth. “The new jobs will generate local economic activity across the regions, as well as driving competition in the retail sector and offering convenience and choice to consumers.”
