Panic-buying shoppers have descended on supermarkets nationwide, with widespread reports of vast queues in-store, following An Taoiseach’s announcement regarding measures to combat the further spread of coronavirus at 11am this morning.

People have been taking to social media in their droves to show the extent of both the crowds and empty shelves supermarkets are currently experiencing. According to one shopper at Tesco Liffey Valley, “the queues are crazy, shelves are empty and the number of customers is getting bigger by the minute”.

Elsewhere, customers reported “plenty of panic buying in Tesco Finglas”, while another person posted a picture of rows of empty shelves at a Dunnes Stores outlet in Carlow, apart from the very top shelf. A customer at Dunnes Store’s Sandyford outlet likened the store to “Christmas Eve at 3pm”.

Meanwhile, a shopper at Aldi Maynooth this afternoon told ShelfLife the store had “already done a full day’s trading,” at 2pm, according to their checkout assistant.

The Taoiseach announced in a special briefing this morning, that from close of business today, all schools and universities will close. All public gatherings of more than 100 people indoors and 500 outdoors are now banned.

People have been advised to work from home where possible, and limit face to face exposure in  workplaces by staggering working hours and breaks.

The measures will be in effect until 29 March. However, Taoiseach Varadkar has said they will be subject to review and extension where necessary.
