Smithwick’s officially launches Winter Spirit
Smithwick’s officially launched Winter Spirit, a limited edition seasonal ale in 500ml bottle format only, last night at The Stag’s Head in Dublin.
18 October 2013
Smithwick’s Master Brewer/Production Manager Alan Dempsey took everyone through a tutored tasting of all three Smithwick varieties now on the market, the other two being Smithwick’s Ale and Smithwick’s Pale Ale.
Alan explained that in making a winter ale, they sought a beer that would have body and colour and he believes that they’ve got it right with Winter Spirit. Winter Spirit provides a warmer, deeper flavour as a result of the roasted barley used in the brewing process.
Some 54 people work at the Smithwick’s Brewery in Kilkenny to produce the Smithwick’s and its extensions but only one batch of Winter Spirit has been made so stocks are limited, explained Smithwick’s Brand Manager Lisa Ronayne.
“Winter Spirit is a bit more special, a bit more premium,” she explained of the 4.5% ABV darker newcomer, “It has been in planning alongside Pale Ale for some time now.”
The launch, which follows on from the success of Smithwick’s Pale Ale two years ago, is aimed primarily at the off-trade and the new brew has a RRP of €2.49 although a special Christmas gift pack will be available containing two bottles of Pale Ale and two of Winter Spirit for a RRP of €8.
This is the first brew from the new Smithwick’s Seasonal Ales range and it’s understood that a Summer version is also in the pipeline for launch in the Spring.
