Sky has launched its Sky Sports Pub Challenge, a brand new interactive in-play, mobile app. Available exclusively to pub- and club-goers watching live Barclays Premier League football in official Sky Sports licensed venues, the free app has been designed to drive profitable footfall*, while also creating unique match-day experiences.

The app can only be played in Sky Sports establishments and so encourages customers to watch the games live in pubs, rather than at home.

It drums up a competitive spirit and can be played between friends, meaning bigger groups and potential for more profit (the app allows players to create an event – sharing where they will be and what games they will be watching, which are viewable by their facebook friends).

It runs a selection of quizzes, polls and in-play predictions before, during and after the game, so Sky Sports venues can attract customers earlier and keep them longer after the game finishes.

Pubs can opt-in to offer in-venue prizes to customers playing the Challenge (a free pint, or a meal, for example) which can serve as another incentive and point of differentiation when they search for their local Sky Sports venue on the pub finder part of the app.

Curated live by a Sky Sports Games Master, the free downloadable app gives Premier League viewers the chance to win weekly and monthly prizes including weekly Barclays Premier League match tickets, monthly prizes up to £2,500 and a grand end-of-season prize of £20,000 through pre-game predictions, real-time quiz questions related to the match on-screen and post-match polls.

“We’re launching our Sky Sports Pub Challenge app as part of our commitment to investing in helping licensees to get the most out of Sky Sports for their venues,” explained David Rey, Managing Director of Sky Business, “By creating a unique point of interest and the best possible entertainment experience, it’ll help to drive profitable footfall to our customers’ venues ahead of the games, encourage people to stay longer after matches and to return for future games.”

On downloading the app, football fans can use the ‘pub finder’ to locate their nearest Sky Sports venue. On arrival, they check-in to their pub or club to start engaging in the pre- and post-match trivia and in-play predictions to score points before, during and after the match. All questions answered correctly give players points, which accumulate during the season – fuelling a competitive-punter spirit.

To help Sky Sports venues promote the app, the first 500 licensees signing up on the Sky Sports Pub Challenge page at www.previewlive.co.uk/pubchallenge receive a free POS pack including an A2 poster, beer mats and table talkers.

Check-in rates will be recognised through monthly prizes (including football shirts, match tickets and retail vouchers) and entry into a grand prize draw at the end of the season to win a free Sky Ultimate commercial subscription. Venues achieving an average of more than 10 customer check-ins per game in any month of the season will be entered into the prize draw.

Sky is promoting the app to consumers through advertising on pub TV screen feeds, on-air promos with Talk Sports, social media and direct e-mails to existing Sky Bet, Fantasy Football and Super 6 users.

In addition to freezing prices for the third-consecutive year, Sky also announced a new free third viewing card and free online training through CPL Training Group. This support joins existing features including free Sky WiFi, HD, 3D, Sky Sports Preview magazine and Preview Live.
