SainsburysAn unusual recruitment advertisement on the website www.workingmums.co.uk was brought to ShelfLife’s attention this month. The ad stated “Pharmacist – Sainsbury’s – Republic of Ireland”. When we rang Sainsbury’s directly and asked them where in the Republic of Ireland this job was located, they said they had no knowledge of it and directed us to check the Sainsbury’s website as all jobs were posted there.

However the job was not advertised on the Sainsbury’s website. When we called a number on the www.workingmums.co.uk website we were told that if the job wasn’t on Sainsbury’s website it meant the position has been filled. So another call was made to Sainsbury’s and we are told that there were no Sainsbury’s stores in the Republic of Ireland (shock) but that the ad was most likely trying to recruit staff from across the border to work in Northern Ireland stores. The recruitment agent said: “We find it very difficult to recruit pharmacists in the UK but it’s not such a problem in Northern Ireland”. The ad on the website states: “New stores and extensions, along with a constant drive to improve levels of customer service and widen our choice of products. At Sainsbury’s, we’ve got some exciting plans to grow over the next few years. But we can only make them happen if we continue to recruit and develop talented people who share our passion for retail – and that’s where you come in.”

So this begs the questions; are the public being totally misled by this advertisement or do Sainsbury’s really have plans to open stores in the south? We intend to keep an eye on things.
