At first glance you might think Bertie Ahern and Louis Walsh have just been cast in the latest Shrek movie, but it soon dawns you’re actually looking at the latest instalment of Spar’s TV campaign. The former taoiseach and pop impresario as you’ve never seen them before, as cartoon characters that is, are the stars of Spar’s new ‘S-Factor’ series to promote the convenience store’s latest range of ‘Euro Crunch’ cut-price products.

The €1 million ad series is one of the first in Ireland to use state-of-the-art 3D animation. Developed by Dublin animators Noho in conjunction with Temple Bar firm Model Communications, each 30 second ad uses technology similar to that used in the popular Shrek movies.

The tongue-in-cheek advert is running on RTÉ, TV3 and dozens of digital and cable channels including Sky, ITV and Channel 4. The campaign is expected to run into the autumn and through to the winter to promote a range of value offers available in Spar stores nationwide.
