Nestlé Ireland has become the first major confectionery company to use 100% sustainable cocoa in its entire range.

Nestlé has become the first major confectionery company to source 100% sustainable cocoa in Ireland, the company has announced. From 1st January 2016, the entire range of Nestlé products, including KitKat, Aero, Milkybar, After Eight, Quality Street and many more, will be produced using certified sustainable cocoa sourced through Nestlé Cocoa Plan.

“In achieving this milestone, we are demonstrating our long-term commitment to making a real difference to cocoa farmers and their communities,” says Andrew McIver, managing director, confectionery, Nestlé UK & Ireland. “The Nestlé Cocoa Plan is helping famrer to run profitable farms, support the elimination of child labour and ensure a sustainable supply of cocoa.”

The system offers training for farmers in effective areasNestlé has been working with both UTZ Certified and the Fairtrade Foundation for independent certification that cocoa is sourced and produced sustainably on farms with safe working conditions. The UTZ programme aims to improve conditions by training farmers in cost efficiency, sustainability and how to create opportunities for their families while safeguarding the environment. This type of training also allows companies to secure their supplies for the future. 

UTZ certified coffee, cocoa and tea is currently harvested in 37 countries around the world, and sold in 137 countries.
