Multiples continue to increase off-sales share

Multiples continue to take a growing share of the grocery take-home beer, cider and wine market according to the latest off-trade figures from Kantar Worldpanel.

Multiples grew sales by 0.8% in the 24 weeks to 14th April 2013 putting their alcohol sales share even further up the grocery retail ladder at 91.0% from the 89.6% share they had in the 24 weeks to 15 April 2012.  Tesco grew sales 1.9% to reach a 33.5% share at the expense of other outlets such as Dunnes whose sales fell by some 0.5% leaving the chain with an unchanged market share of 18.5%. SuperValu’s share of the alcohol take-home market fell from 19.9% to 18.7% on a decline in sales during the period of 6.6%.

However rising to 4.9% of the grocery take-home spend on alcohol from 4.2%, Superquinn grew sales 16.2% while discounter Aldi experienced a 39.8% spurt in sales growing to a  6.8% share of the market (up from 4.8% in the same period in 2012); this at a time when Lidl’s share fell from 8.6% to  7.9%, representing a drop in sales of of 8.5%.

‘Other outlets’ experienced a 16.0% sales decline dropping their share from 11.4% to 9.7%.
