Lidl Ireland has opened a brand-new store in Wellpark, Galway City, creating 24 local jobs.

The retailer said it invested €8 million in the new store, which is bright and airy with a spacious interior layout, high ceilings and wide aisles. The Wellpark site boasts 530 car parking spaces, including reserved spaces for families and disabled shoppers.

Damien Hanniffy, store manager, Lidl Wellpark. “We are thrilled to be giving customers in the Galway City area the opportunity to make Lidl their new main shop destination where they can start to make real savings. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our new shoppers and settling into the local community over the coming weeks, months and years.”

As part of Lidl’s ‘A Better Tomorrow’ corporate social responsibility programme and to mark the opening, Lidl Wellpark welcomed representatives from Galway Hospice to accept a donation of €1,000 to help them continue to provide the best quality of life for their patients in the Galway City area and beyond.

Lidl Wellpark shoppers will also have the chance to win their entire Christmas shop for just €1 by purchasing a ticket to the retailer’s annual trolley dash in aid of its charity partner, Jigsaw. Tickets are on sale for two weeks starting 16 November. Winners will be challenged to a ‘Supermarket Sweep’ style dash around their local Lidl store to grab as much of their Christmas shopping as possible in two minutes. All proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to supporting youth mental health in Ireland.

Nicola Ward, Galway LGFA Player and winner of TG4 All-Star officially opened the store. “I’m delighted to join Lidl this morning for the opening of their brand-new store in Wellpark,” said Ward. “The store is set to contribute positively to the locality and I am very much looking forward to having a Lidl store in the area and most importantly, in such a convenient location in Galway City.”
