Irish Times’ Best Shops 2016: shortlist revealed

The Irish Times Best Shops 2016, which aims to honour Irish businesses going an extra mile in all areas, has revealed its shortlist of 100 stores across a variety of categories.

After judges considering thousands of submissions and visiting almost as many, The Irish Times has revealed its shortlist of 100 stores across a variety of categories for its Best Shops 2016 awards.

We at ShelfLife are particualrly interested in the nominees for the Best Food & Drink category. The nominees, as per the Times’ site are:

Country Choice, The Milk Market, Limerick; A winner last year, and off shoot of the popular Nenagh store.

Baggot Street Wines, 17 Baggot St Upr, Dublin 4; Interesting wines, terrifically informed staff. Caviston’s Food Emporium, Glasthule, Co Dublin; Fine foods stocked to the rafters and a great fish counter.

Higgins Butchers, 2 Sutton Cross, Dublin 13; Sells Aberdeen Angus aged beef and its own charcuterie.

Celtic Whiskey Shop, 27-28 Dawson St, Dublin 2; A distilled collection of the world’s finest malts, wines and beer.

Fallon & Byrne, 11-17 Exchequer St, Dublin 2; Two-time winner in this competition, the city grocers is as popular as ever.

Ardkeen Quality Food Store, Passage East Road, Waterford; A supermarket selling the best of Irish artisan food and a winner in 2014.

Castlemaine Farm Shop, Circular Road, Roscommon; Aged lamb, beef and rare breed pork worth the journey.

The Little Cheese Shop, Gray’s Lane, Dingle, Co Kerry; A Swiss-trained cheesemaker and producer runs this superbly stinky spot.

Organico Bantry, 2 Glengarriff Rd, Bantry, Co Cork; A modern health food shop stocking its own bread, organic fruit and veg.

The Burren Smokehouse and Shop, Kincora Road, Lisdoonvarna, Co Clare; Succulent fish and a great story for visitors.

MEANWHILE, in the Best Family-Run Shop category, Nolan’s Supermarket in Dublin 3 is among the shortlist.

The winners of the Best Shops 2016 will be announced by the Irish Times on August 27th. Click here for the full list of nominees.
