Several high-profile retailers in Dublin have joined forces to form the Dublin City Traders’ Alliance, with a view to opposing the city council’s plans to pedestrianise College Green in the heart of the city centre, the Sunday Times reports.

Brown Thomas, Arnotts, Jervis Centre and the Ilac Centre form the core of the group, which say their revenues will take a hit if the proposed changes – that will see all traffic other than public transport re-routed away from College Green – go ahead. The Times article sagely points out that something the retailers have in common other than their central location is their ownership of car parks, or licensing of their names to one.

The plans for college green are aimed at allowing Luas trams to cross the city centre along with buses, while allowing more space for cyclists and pedestrians – while maintaining access to the various city centre car parks should consumers wish to use them.

The Times also reports that the group, headed by solicitor Noel Smith, has already met with council officials and contacted councillors.
