Insight NACS Convenience Retail Awards for its innovation on the forecourt in South Africa.

The awards, sponsored by Imperial Tobacco and PayPoint, were presented during the Insight NACS Future of Convenience event in London, 25-26 September 2013. This annual forum for the European and international convenience petroleum industry, comprising a series of retail store tours and two conference days, attracted delegates from 35 countries.

The store located close to Cape Town International Airport, has been designed with travellers and commuters in mind and offers a wide range of products and services. There is a full range of hot food plus a large seating area with plasma screens, where customers can catch up on the latest international news or relax with a cup of coffee.

A modern layout appeals to shoppers and the signage portrays a fresh and youthful image. For business people, there is free Wi-Fi, boardroom and meeting room facilities for hire, plus a car wash and valet services to help them make the most efficient use of their time.

A strong financial performance impressed the judging panel. In its first three months of trading, the FreshStop Airport City site attracted 160,542 customers and achieved sales of R4,087,292.

Joseph Bona, a judge and president, retail division, CBX said: "I just think it really represents a global solution to convenience with a fresh offer in a good/clean and simple design that is easily replicable and it’s very well executed."

At the awards, International Store Manager of the Year went to Jabir Pochiya, store manager at Euro Garages’ Beehive Service Station in Lancashire – one of the top performing sites across a 120-site estate at the UK’s third largest independent forecourt operator. Judges praised his team building and business results. "He is very target driven and believes a personal approach gets the most out of his staff and keeps them motivated; he really buys into the ‘work hard, play hard’ analogy."

Hubtill, winner of the Global Product Availability Award, aims to increase efficiency in-store and throughout the supply chain, improve on-shelf availability and stock management; while also removing the need for store owners to spend time interpreting EPoS reports. Instead, they can spend more time front of shop offering customer service and face-to-face contact.
