Independent News and Media has appointed Vincent Crowley as group chief operating officer (COO), with immediate effect from 13 November. Crowley was chief executive of INM Ireland since 2002. His new appointment fills the vacancy created by Gavin O’Reilly, who became group chief executive in May this year.

As a result of Crowley’s appointment, current managing director of Independent Newspapers (Ireland) Ltd, Joe Webb has been promoted to chief executive of INM Ireland, with responsibility over the group’s entire Irish operation, including Newspread, its wholly-owned subsidiary.

Commenting on his appointment, Gavin O’Reilly said Webb is “a strong manager with impressive cost and revenue credentials.” According to sources, it was Webb in his previous role who earlier this year demanded that Dunnes Stores extend pay-on-scan to other news titles, subsequently causing the retailer to demand it for all publications, including Newspread’s magazines.
