Marty Morrissey has been announced as the Gala Television Presenter of the year at the 2018 IFTA Gala Television Awards.

This prestigious award was created in recognition of the skill, professionalism, talent and dedication of Ireland’s leading broadcasters who are currently working across Irish screens every week.

The award was a People’s Choice award and was the only award at the ceremony that was voted for by the general public, who cast their vote on the Gala website in the run-up to the event.

Other nominees for the category included Miriam O’Callaghan, the face of RTE’s Current Affairs; Ryan Tubridy, The Late Late Show; BBC’s Graham Norton,; Karen Koster from TV 3’s Xposé; Elaine Crowley who fronts her own daytime studio show Elaine on TV3, Hector Ó hEochagáin, TG4’s widely recognised Gaelgoir and explorer; Christine Lampard (Bleakley), the presenter of BBC’s daily The One Show; late night studio discussion show and anchor for TV3’s major sports coverage Matt Cooper, and RTÉ’s news anchor Sharon Ní Bheoláin. However, it was RTÉ’s popular Sports presenter Marty Morrissey, who wowed the nation with his dancing skills this year on Dancing with the Stars, that took home the prestigious Gala Television Presenter of the Year Award for his presenting work.

Attendees were entertained by Jason Byrne who hosted the Awards Ceremony at the RDS Concert Hall.

Highlights of the show included Shay Healy receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, Red Rock receiving Best Soap category for third year, Peter Fooot receiving Best Director and Derry Girls winning Best Comedy and Best Writer for Lisa McGee.
