This week Iceland Foods has bought back its seven Irish stores, previously operated by its franchisee AIM group, for an undisclosed amount.

The seven Iceland stores in the Republic of Ireland are located in Ballyfermot, Finglas, Navan Road, The Ilac Centre, Coolock, Clonmel and Carlow. All members of staff in the stores have been offered the opportunity to transfer to Iceland.

According to Iceland chairman and chief executive, Malcolm Walker, the move to take back control of its Irish stores will help its international growth strategy, which aims to make Iceland the world’s number one frozen food brand.

On acquiring the seven stores in the Republic of Ireland, Walker commented: "We see great opportunities for growth in Ireland and taking direct control of these stores will help us to ensure that we offer the best value and the highest standards of service to our valued Irish customers."

He also added: "It will help us to accelerate the expansion of the business, creating new Irish jobs, more opportunities for Irish suppliers and making our unique branded products available to more people throughout the country."

On the work of the AIM Group which operated the stores when Iceland withdrew to simplify the troubled business, Walker said: "We are grateful to Naeem Maniar and his team at AIM Group for their good work in maintaining our brand in the Republic since they took on the franchise in 2009. Now is the right time for us to return."
