Work has begun on the installation of a state-of-the-art Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at Dundrum Town Centre which will allow businesses and customers to use 5G services from all mobile network operators throughout the shopping centre, the first time this service has been offered in a shopping centre in Ireland.

The news was announced by Shared Access, owner and operator of shared wireless infrastructure for mobile operators and Hammerson, owner, operator and developer of sustainable prime urban real estate.

In a move which they say will “cement Dundrum’s status as one of the premier shopping destinations across Europe”, the DAS infrastructure includes a rooftop installation which will also help accelerate 5G connectivity to the local community.

“With footfall in excess of 17m visitors annually, it’s important that we provide best in class services to our visitors and brand partners and that includes being at the forefront of mobile connectivity,” said Don Nugent, senior general manager at Dundrum Town Centre. “Our partnership with Shared Access began in 2008 and since then they have ensured that we deliver on this objective. This latest upgrade enables us to provide a consistent, resilient, high-speed 5G connectivity in all of our buildings and car parks 24/7.”

Shared Access has extensive retail experience in the DAS mobile connectivity sector, owning and managing systems in six other retail centres across Ireland. The company has worked with Hammerson at Dundrum Town Centre for the past 15 years.

“Today’s shoppers are super savvy and expect always-on mobile coverage wherever they go,” said Sam Jackman, chief development officer of Shared Access. “From a retail occupier’s perspective, robust mobile connectivity is essential for every part of their business – from operations to sales and marketing. As a neutral host we are able to bring all three Irish mobile network operators into the centre and guarantee super-fast and reliable 5G coverage for everyone.”
