The CSNA wishes to thank and express its admiration for the way that supplies to its members stores were carried out throughout the bad weather in December. The association does not wish to single out any individual company for praise as it is impressed with all of them. Our members were able to provide fresh provisions, the daily newspaper and necessary fuel to customers in their locality when travel further afield was impossible. Many of these customers expressed their appreciation for the presence of local shops; we hope they realise the importance of their service to the community. To these companies that assisted us – a big thank you.

Magazines Ireland is the umbrella body for the Irish Magazines Industry. At their annual prize ceremony held in December, Fionnuala Carolan of ShelfLife was the recipient of the Editor of the year award for a business-to-business magazine. The CSNA has worked with Fionnuala for a number of years and congratulates Fionnuala and Mediateam for this recognition of the importance of ShelfLife to Irish retailers.

Finally may we congratulate District Justice Mary Devins for her appreciation of the seriousness of tobacco smuggling. The Justice sentenced a Chinese national to three months imprisonment and a fine of €1,000 for possession of 18,600 cigarettes in Castlebar, Co. Mayo – The Phone Shop in which this ‘student’ was operating was, according to the customs officials and Gardaí that raided the premises, doing a lucrative trade in various contraband products. This is in sharp contrast to the pathetic fines that some judges have been ‘rewarding’ smugglers with, and hopefully it will make these criminals consider the risks of involvement in illegal cigarette sales.
